      S165 – Natural Suzuri Stone 5″ x 2 1/2”

Suzuri is a flat grinding stone used to make Sumi ink. It has a sloping indentation which forms a small well at one end. A Sumi ink stick is ground on the stone surface with plain water to product liquid ink.

      Suzuri Stone Care and Usage

      • To avoid unevenness, indentations, and grooves, grind the ink over the entire surface of the stone.
      • Never leave the ink stick on the wet stone surface as it will adhere and damage the stone’s surface.
      • Wash with water after each use, gently using your fingers.

    • SSB700 – Sumi Ink Stick

SSB700 – Artist Quality Ink Stick

For thousands of years, sumi ink sticks have been made by mixing soot with flue to form solid blocks. They are ground on a Suzuri stone with water to produce ink in the way of traditional Asian artisans. Sumi ink sticks are unsurpassed for producing the famous Five Colors, or shades of black, that form the basis of monochromatic Sumi painting. The subtlety of Sumi ink is evident in the variety of tones and values it produces.

      Sumi Ink Stick Care

      • Store out of direct sunlight, avoiding heat and moisture.
      • Wash, clean and dry after each use to avoid mold growth.
      • Use ink as soon as possible after making it for best results.

    • CS18 – Traditional Chinese Ink, Silver Black

CS18 – Traditional Chinese Ink, Silver Black

Silver Black is a dense black ink with silver powder suspension. The black outlines silver on rice paper; the effect is more subtle on other papers. Specifically made for Chinese art techniques, but suitable for all ink work, painting, drawing and calligraphy. Fade-resistant and water re-soluble. Chinese inks produce slightly cooler tones than Japanese inks. Convenient lid design with an easy pour cap allows for more control and fewer spills. Bottle contains 180 ml (approximately 6.1 oz) ink, and comes boxed.

      Dimensions: 2 7/32” x 1 1/2” x 5 15/16”

      Weight: 8.3 oz

      Usage tips:

      • For best use, shake well and vigorously before pouring the ink out of the bottle. You should hear the mixing balls shaking inside of the bottle; these disperse the metallic pigment throughout the ink.
      • Use on absorbent washi (rice papers) for strongest metallic effect.

    • CY18 – Traditional Chinese Ink, Black

CY18 – Traditional Chinese Ink, Black

CY18 is a dense black ink formulated to create tones in varying shades of gray with the addition of water, making it perfect for delicate washes. It has a less water-resistant formula than CM18. Specifically made for Chinese art techniques, but suitable for all ink work, painting, drawing and calligraphy. Fade-resistant and water re-soluble. Chinese inks produce slightly cooler tones than Japanese inks. Bottle contains 180 ml (approximately 6.1 oz) ink. Comes boxed.

Mixes with Chinese watercolors for interesting effects. Convenient lid design with an easy pour cap allows for more control and fewer spills.

The unique adhesive formulation of these inks allows for increased stability but they will reconstitute in water. When these inks dry on absorbent papers, they can be wet mounted (i.e. water-based adhesive is used to bond the artwork to the mounting surface without bleeding or smearing).

Because this is a pigment ink, not a dye ink, it should not be used in refillable pens. These inks are not acrylic inks nor are there any acrylic properties or ingredients in them.

      Conforms to ASTM D-4236.

CM18 – Traditional Chinese Ink, Ultra Black

CM18 is a very dense black, water resistant ink that contains almost double the pigment of CY18. It creates unique tones when thinned with water and works on porous and less porous papers, including metallics. Chinese inks produce slightly cooler tones than Japanese inks. Bottle contains 180 ml (approximately 6.1 oz) ink. Comes boxed.
